One question for next season is whether to focus on short races or long races. Mixed feelings. On the one hand I'd like to turn out a better 10K best. I know I can beat 36:30 and qualify for the Peachtree Top Seeding. I only have to snip 35 seconds from my best. But focusing on running short distances like the 10K could put undue strain on my running program and insert more injury into the mix. I'm considering a long distance approach where I focus on long slow distances and over time increase my capability in them. I think that I have much more aptitude at the longer distances than I do at the shorter ones. I could be wrong. But one thing I'm beginning to realize as I look at races and schedules for next season is that I need to find a solid focus and stick with it. This means sacrificing some goals. I learned this season that a season is rather short. I'm starting to feel some age pressure, although I shouldn't. Because I took the six years off from running I have a good clean slate to work with. I should have a good four to six years before I hit my lifetime physical endurance sport peak. So I could do a season or two long and then go short. Or vice versa. The desire to race an Ironman, really race it to the best of my personal ability, is strong in me. The fact that overuse injuries jump in the way only makes the drive that much stronger. But the desire to check the box and qualify top seeded for the Peachtree is also there. I need to get my plan together soon. Just some thoughts running through the old noggin.
